I have never had one of my bikes stolen (over the years I have owned 5), thank God... *knocking on my wood desk right now* But I have know people who have.
Here are a couple of tips to help you prevent motorcycle theft:
-
Don’t Leave the Key in the Ignition
Ya, it sounds stupid to me too. But that really is the leading cause of theft. Sometimes, you just don’t think about it... You just turn off the
engine and walk away, or someone starts talking to you as soon as you dismount, and you get distracted. And by the time you remember
your mistake - it’s too late.
-
Always Park Your Bike in a Well-Lit Place
Park your motorcycle in lighted areas where everyone will see your bike - and will notice if someone is messing with it. If you park in the
dark part of the alley, because you think no one will see it and get any ideas, well, you’re not looking at it like a thief would.
Do that, and the thief says “Thanks!”
-
Motorcycle Alarm Systems Work
If you’re lucky enough to have $20K to throw down on a brand new bike, you can probably afford the extra $1K to have the mechanic
install a decent alarm system before you even take it out on your first ride. Most motorcycle insurance companies will also give you
discounts if you have alarm systems - so it makes sense on a number of levels.
Just don’t be like this guy, and make your first ride your last.
